" 11 things you must know...
that can help you avoid the cowboy cleaners! "

1. What will you really get for your money?
If it seems too cheap, ask yourself WHY? Is it because they are only going to give a quick once-over and then be on the way out of the door... with your money - leaving most of the dirt, grime and stains still with you!

2. Are there any hidden charges?
Such as extra for VAT, freshener or pre-spray etc., quite often added on at the last moment!

3. How much time will you receive for your money?
If it is incredibly quick, then again, ask yourself if they are only going to give a quick once-over making no real attempt to clean or remove any spots or stains!

4. Are they going to use a pre-spray?
The majority of carpets and upholstery, etc., will benefit greatly from being pre-sprayed. A specially formulated cleaning solution is sprayed onto the furnishings being cleaned - prior to the main clean: this helps to dissolve dirt, grime and stains that cannot be removed during a normal clean.

5. Do they use protective foam blocks, foils or plastic squares?
Some items of furniture may leave rust, varnish, wood or dye stains, etc., if they are placed back on a carpet that is damp; to prevent this, these items will need to placed on protective foam blocks, foil or plastic squares. Small foam blocks are used to raise items slightly off the floor ( e.g. boxes or flat-based suites ), foil or plastic squares are placed under table and chair legs etc., ( they are simply slipped out when the carpet is fully dry ).

6. Are they going to clean a small test area?
On the day of the cleaning, if you have any doubts as to how well your furnishings will clean, are they prepared to start with a small test area ( when practical ), to show you how well they will clean; only continuing if you are satisfied with the results?

7. Are they an established company?
Are they an established company or are they just starting out and maybe even using inexperienced workers?

8. Are they a local service?
Do they offer you a professional, local service all year round or are they based 20, 30 or 40 miles away and only "IN YOUR AREA FOR A SHORT TIME" and then maybe never seen again!!!

9. Do they charge you for doing nothing!
If for any unforeseen circumstances e.g. illness, you have to cancel at the last minute do they still expect you to pay them!!! Some companies expect you to pay them unless you give them "at least 48 hours notice!"

10. Do they attempt to clean right up to the edges of your carpet where possible?
Some cleaners use equipment that cannot get any closer than 1 or 2 inches from the edges. Also some cleaners do not bother attempting to clean close to doorways or around the edges of carpets because it saves them time.

11. Do they offer you a discount if they are more than 30 minutes late or, if due to
unforeseen circumstances on their part they have to cancel?
If they are a professional, friendly and reliable company then they should be happy to give you a discount to compensate you if, due to any unforeseen circumstances, you are inconvenienced

Check list ... IMPORTANT - please read
Slippery surfaces It may be slippery when you walk from wet carpets onto hard surfaces: tiles, lino, marble, wooden floors, metal/painted/plastic - steps/doorsteps etc. Also, stairs can be slippery especially the stair edges...

" Please leave the slippery floor warning signs down until the carpets are fully dry & warn everyone to take small steps "
...................................................................................................................................................................

Indirect Heating and Ventilation A warm room with ventilation ( windows open " if safe " ) and the internal doors open to allow the air to circulate will speed the drying time and minimise condensation. A room with no heating or ventilation may prevent the furnishings from drying properly and could lead to odour problems! etc.

Your furnishings should be touch dry within 6-8 hours - if they are not then you will need to increase the heating and ventilation. If using a portable heater or fan: do not aim it directly at the carpet or furnishings, also keep it away from curtains, draughts from open doors/windows etc.

Your furnishings should be dry or virtually dry within 24 hours - if for some reason they are not - please increase the heating and ventilation and then call us immediately for advice. Please do not wait as this could lead to mould, mildew or odour problems! etc.
..................................................................................................................................................
Do not place furniture, boxes, plants, rugs, mats or pots etc. back onto the carpet until it is fully dry, even though most carpets will feel dry to the touch within 6-8 hours, items should be kept off ideally for at least two days - ( 48 - 72 hours ). Unless they are placed on protective plastic or foam blocks
( provided free ).

Items should be kept on the Dry side of the plastic, otherwise the carpet/furniture may become damaged by rust, varnish, dye stains, wood stains, water marks or mould etc.

* Please note: carpets on concrete/hard floors may take longer to dry than carpets on floorboards.

Also, carpet under low furniture, beds, cupboard, suites etc. may also take longer to dry, as there is less air movement. Thick pile carpets will also take longer to dry.

......................................................................................................................

Leave any protective plastic or foam blocks under the furniture until the carpets are fully dry, even though most carpets will feel dry to the touch within 6-8 hours, items should be kept off ideally for at least two days ( 48 - 72 hours )Otherwise the carpet/furniture may become damaged: see above.

......................................................................................................................

Cushions Do not place wet cushions against radiators or walls, etc. as this could cause damage. Also do not replace the cushions back flat onto the chairs until fully dry.

Keep damp cushions off printed labels. Turn cushions evenly.

......................................................................................................................

Keep all materials: curtains, blankets, table covers, suite covers, etc. off cleaned carpets until they are fully dry. Otherwise the cleaning solution may soak up into the fabric and cause a permanent watermark!

( Protective plastic where needed will be provided for free ).
.......................................................................................................................

Before walking on freshly cleaned carpets If the soles of shoes are dirty, wipe them clean with a damp cloth and then wipe them dry. Even just a few steps outside can dirty the soles of your shoes. Protective shoe covers will be provided for free, where needed.

.......................................................................................................................

Move items several times ( every 6-8 hours if possible ) until the carpets are fully dry: Suite, Beds, Rugs/Mats, flat based TV's, if advised to. This allows the carpet to air properly.

.......................................................................................................................

Do not vacuum carpets, rugs or upholstery etc. until they are fully dry.

" Stain Removal Tips"

(use at your own discretion)

WARNING! Please read all steps before deciding whether to continue?
All information is for "general guidance only." [ Be "Extra Cautious"if the furnishings are valuable! ]

1. If possible test a small area first in an inconspicuous place where it will not show if things go wrong! Work from the outside of the stain towards the middle so as not to spread the stain. Check to make sure there is no colour change or damage to the fabric/fibre. Working against the direction of the pile may cause damage.

If you are in any doubt about any aspect of stain removal, stop and call a professional cleaner immediately for advice.

Never work on any dangerous substances or in any dangerous situation.

Caution: stains on some fabrics/fibres may look to have been removed but may show up more as they dry; keep an eye on where the stains were until they are fully dry.

2 Act quickly!

*Do not wait for the stain to dry out - as this may cause it to become permanent.

*Never leave a stain wet for a long time - as this can cause mould, mildew, odours or colour change etc.

3. Do not do anything that could affect any warranties or insurance cover that you may have.

----------------------------------------------------------

4. Carefully try and clear up any solid spillage with a tissue, spoon or blunt knife etc. then, gently pat a dry tissue or colour-fast towel etc. onto the stain; repeat until the stain is removed. Leave as dry as possible.

----------------------------------------------------------

5a. If there is still a stainand the fabric/fibre is wet cleanable?you can gently pat a damp tissue or colour-fast towel etc., onto the stain. Repeat until the stain is removed. Leave as dry as possible. Warning!some wet cleanable fabrics/fibres e.g. COTTON, may be damaged by spot cleaning. This happens where the wet area meets the dry area and leaves a ring mark or water mark around the stain you have tried to clean. If in any doubtdo not attempt to clean; call a professional cleaner immediately.

5b. If there is still a stainand the fabric/fibre is dry-clean only? call a professional dry-cleaner immediately for advice, see: Yellow Pages/Thomson Local, Internet search etc.

----------------------------------------------------------

6. Warning! Deep down stains may "wick" back up to the surface after a while and need further treatment.

7. If the underlay has become wet it may need to be taken up and either dried or replaced. If it is left under the carpet it could still be wet a week or more later! and could start to smell and go mouldy.

8. If you use a stain remover, read the instructions carefully. Use of the wrong cleaning productor cleaning too much in one area could cause permanent damage.

9. If you cannot call a cleaner, use this last procedure at your own discretion!

As a last resort you can place a thick pad of tissues or colour-fast towels etc. on top of the stain and weight it down with an old telephone book or similar heavy flat object; this may help to absorb more of the stain.

Make sure the stain does not soak through to the object and cause any damage.

Change the tissues or towel etc. every 5 or 10 minutes until no more of the stain is being removed.

Do not leave the stain covered for too long as this may prevent the fabric/fibre from properly airing and cause damage. Make sure there is no distortion to the pile.

Don't Panic!

Stain protection treatment

"Protecting your valuable furnishings from those nasty little spills"
WHY take the risk that the valuable investment that you have made in your furnishings will be ruined with just one tiny accident? All that it takes is, one cup of tea, one glass of red wine or one child's ice lolly etc. dropped on the floor or on your suite, and you could have a permanent stain!

Having your furnishings stain protected greatly reduces the chance of this ever happening to you. Giving you peace of mind and adding years to the life, looks, freshness and softness of your furnishings.

"That has to be worth thinking about!"

Q. So, what is stain protector and how does it work?

A. Stain protection treatment is a specially formulated fluorocarbon solution that is sprayed onto your carpets or upholstery etc., it creates a fine, invisible coating of fluorocarbon protector over each fibre, along the lines of a non-stick frying pan. This layer of protector creates a barrier that makes it virtually impossible for dirt, grime, stains or spillages to stick to it.

This greatly reduces the chance of most water-based and oil-based spillages from penetrating into the fibres and causing permanent stains and gives you time to clean the spillage up before any damage occurs. * Some substances: glue, gloss paint, varnish and very hot liquids etc., may cause a permanent stain, even with protection treatment.

With proper care and attention most, if not all, stains or spillages that you may encounter will be quickly and easily removed, many with just a tissue or damp colourfast cloth. Even if you do not clean the stain up immediately, there is still a good chance that it can be removed at a later date, even months or years later! However, the quicker that you get to the stain, the more chance you have of it being removed.

In the average domestic situation the protector can last for up to 2 or 3 years and, provided the furnishings are cleaned on a regular basis, before they become heavily soiled, the protector will usually still be effective even after 1 or 2 cleans. A small top up may be advisable with each clean on areas that have the most use, in front of chairs, around a dinning table or a heavily used armchair etc.

Stain protection treatment, carpets: £10 per 12 x 12 area, upholstery: from £25, ( if treated at the same time as cleaning. )

* Another benefit with stain protector is that it also makes it virtually impossible for dust to stick to your furnishings and it is therefore easier to vacuumand keep clean. This means that your carpets and upholstery etc. will stay looking cleaner for longer, up to 2 or 3 times as long! And, as more of the dirt, dust and grime has been vacuumed out they will be healthier for you and smell fresher ... Anything that makes your life that bit easier has to be worth it.

*** Highly recommended for natural fibres
